How to avoid accidents when biking

Many Californians enjoy biking, and it can be a cost-effective and easy method of transportation, especially in urban areas. While bike riders are allowed to share the roads with motor vehicles, this means bikers must use extra caution when riding where traffic is present. Negligent drivers are a serious concern for bicyclists, but by staying aware and following some basic safety tips, bicycle riders can avoid some accidents.

Bicycle safety

Bicyclists should check their bike before each ride. Ensure that the tires are properly inflated, brakes are working and there are no other visible issues with the bike. Safety gear like gloves, a well-fitted helmet, and proper shoes can help one ride safely and provide protection in an accident. When riding in conditions where visibility is limited, the bike should have lights and the rider should wear bright and reflective clothing.

When riding on roadways, bicyclists should stay as far to the right as possible, except when turning or passing. It’s essential for bike riders to follow the laws of the road and to pay close attention to stop signs, traffic lights, and other vehicles. Riding in groups can provide some protection by increasing visibility and ensuring that one has help if needed.

After a bike accident

A bicyclist may take all proper precautions to stay safe and still be involved in an accident with a negligent driver. Motorists don’t always pay attention to bicycles and may not take the steps needed to avoid crashing into a bike. California bicyclists who’ve been injured in an accident caused by a negligent driver have the right to seek compensation to cover injury-related expenses.
