When should I worry about a concussion?

Concussions can happen for various reasons, such as minor collisions, falls and other accidents. Fortunately, most concussions are mild, requiring little to no medical intervention. However, some cases could cause severe symptoms that can significantly affect an individual’s life.

Any incident that causes blunt force to the head can cause a concussion. The impact could make the brain move or bounce within the skull, leading to damage manifesting as physical and emotional symptoms, including the following:

  • Easily bothered by light or noise
  • Balancing issues
  • Dizziness and nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Vision issues
  • Inability to focus or concentrate
  • Grogginess
  • Memory problems
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Sleeping issues

Most patients experience one or more of these conditions, potentially affecting their daily activities. Fortunately, physicians can help address these symptoms. However, they might mistake them for other illnesses if the patient receives medical attention long after the accident. Patients should seek medical care immediately after sustaining the concussion to address their symptoms and underlying injuries.

Some cases require urgent care

In some cases, a blow to the head could cause a blood clot in the brain. If this happens, the patients must receive urgent care. This injury could cause the following warning signs:

  • Intense headaches that do not dissipate
  • Numbness and coordination problems
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Excessive vomiting
  • One pupil is larger than the other
  • Unconsciousness or inability to stay awake

If a patient exhibits these symptoms, it is best to go to the emergency room immediately.

Receiving medical care is vital after an accident

Aside from concussions, accidents can cause injuries that might not have apparent symptoms. These cases might cause issues later and drive the patient’s condition to deteriorate. Ideally, patients should seek medical attention right after the accident to address injuries before they get worse.
